I was merely siding with you against the separation of "cerebral modernism" from more immediately visceral and uncerebral jazz, rock and gospel by citing an example of someone who uses "cerebral techniques" while often expressing an uncomplicated devotion to God.Fredhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02331644511088185408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3371351138596055444.post-3779244368032877622009-05-05T13:32:00.000-07:002009-05-05T13:32:00.000-07:00I guess "gospel" is a relative term. See, he often gets a bad rap for some of his earlier pieces, like Modes de Valeurs, because they utilize techniques found in his treatises. I think his earlier, more justifiable pieces (via strict/rational techniques) were merely compensating for a need to fall near accepted historical practices. Later, he began to trust his synaesthesia and preoccupation with goddy things and birdies.

Eh. Just speculation.Empiricushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11629835829400843701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3371351138596055444.post-39730875036600296162009-05-04T20:49:00.000-07:002009-05-04T20:49:00.000-07:00Fred,

If so, I misconstrued the good Mr Tommasini's prose.

SASator Arepohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00006808744513156317noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3371351138596055444.post-67707545024160383782009-05-04T19:05:00.000-07:002009-05-04T19:05:00.000-07:00Messiaen wrote cerebral gospel music.
